Education: The Irish education system consists of primary, second, and third-level education. Children attend school from the ages of six to 16 or until they have finished three years of secondary-level education.
Primary (first-level) education: Privately owned by religious communities and are not State fund. Begins at six years old. Primary education covers: language, math, social, environment and scientific education, art education including visual arts, music, and drama, social personal and health education.
Secondary-level education: There are different types of post-primary schools: secondary, vocational, community, and comprehensive schools. Secondary schools are privately owned. Vocational school are funded by the State. Community and comprehensive schools are managed by different boards of management. First, at the age of twelve, the student completes a three-year junior cycle. Then, their is a transition year where the student is free from formal examinations and usually is involved in work experience, internship, or traveling. After the transition year, a student is in a two-year or three-year senior cycle. During their senior year cycle, the student take one to three programs all prep for the State examination in order to obtain their Leaving Certificate. The Leaving Certificate focuses on which universities, institutes of technology, and colleges are appropriate for the student to attend for third-level education.
Third-Level education: Third-level education is divided by the university sector, the technological sector, and the colleges of education, which are funded by the state. In addition, their are independent private colleges. In Ireland, there are seven universities that offer bachelor, masters, and doctorate degree programs. The technological sector offers programs with education and training in business, science, engineering, linguistics, and music. The colleges of education offer a three-year bachelor degree program for first-level teachers.
